Sebastian Streiffert (Community Coordinator)
What is your name and what is your field of activity at NCsoft?
My name is Sebastian Streiffert and I work as English Community Coordinator on Aion: The Tower of Eternity.
How did you come to NCsoft?
Oh, long story. Way back in ancient times (when the seas swallowed nations and the skies rained fire) I ran an Aion fansite which some of you may or may not have heard of. Its name was the “Aion Librarian”. This was a hobby project I pursued on the side of studying Information Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Eventually I got in touch with the great people from the NCsoft Brighton offices, and after some time they came to look for a new Community Coordinator. Let’s just say that I didn’t hesitate to apply, even if it would require me to move abroad. And here we are.
What are you working on presently?
I suppose this is a bit of a no-brainer if you read the interview with my Team Lead a few weeks ago, but I’m currently working on preparing for the coming of Aion along the rest of the Aion Community Team. We’re planning ahead for beta, events and all kinds of things we want to do with the community. I’m also trying to keep the non-French and non-German communities out there up to date when we have new bits of information to report on the game’s progress.
What do you like most at your job?
It’s hard to pinpoint one specific part that I like the most, since this job is very multi-faceted. I guess, in away, that is also the very thing that makes it so enjoyable. If I was to narrow it down to one or two things, however, I would have to say the great community interaction and the creative freedom.
What is your favourite NCsoft title and why?
Does it have to be out yet?
*hint* *hint*
On a more serious note, I have always been a fan of Lineage II. I used to play it before I started to work here, way back in its early phases. The only thing you can take with you after playing a game are your memories and stories, and LII definitely gave me some good memories. I will never forget the close to epic alliance wars I participated in during my time in that game.
What other game genres (except MMOs) are you interested in and what are your favourites?
I love all kinds of games, but I’ve always been an especial fan of First-Person Shooters and strategy games. An FPS game is great for some casual relaxation, while I believe strategy games are an excellent way to keep your brain working. Back in the days this void was filled with Day of Defeat and Day of Defeat: Source, while Dawn of War and Call of Duty 4 have gradually taken over since.
What is your favourite TV show or series? What are your favourite films?
This is such a big question; I barely know where to start.
As for series, I’m going to straight out admit that I love British humour, such as the IT-Crowd or Black Books. In order to take a 180 turn, I also feel obliged to mention the series Dexter. It’s just one of those awesome series where you feel that you can really identify with the main character, isn’t it?
Film is trickier, simply because there is so much amazing cinema out there. I enjoy everything from obscure, artistic Japanese flicks (Stereo Future, Sway, Unagi, Battle Royale …), to horror movies (Ringu, Chakushin Ari, 1408, Ils). Mostly everything has a place in my heart.
Do you like reading? If yes, what kind of books do you have in your bookcase?
I like reading, but I suppose I’m too lazy for it. After spending a work-day reading so much on a computer screen, I’m reluctant to go home and read more. I’ve got a few unfinished Terry Pratchett-pockets lying at home, but I’m beginning to doubt whether their last pages will ever see the light of day at all.
What are you doing in your spare time?
I’m the kind of person who likes anything that has an artistic flare to it. Be that drawing, writing, composing music or programming. I’m currently working on all too many things at once: Programming a browser game, composing its soundtrack and writing a novel. There’s just never enough time to do everything you’d like to.
McDonald’s or Burger King?
With risk of appearing rebellious in my constant attempts to not directly answer any of the questions, I’m going to have to go ‘none of the above’, although Burger King obviously has the advantage. There’s a chain in the UK called ‘Gourmet Burger Kitchen’ which serves the most brilliant burgers humanity has ever laid eyes on.
Coca Cola or Pepsi?
Coca Cola Zero. I have a little refrigerator at work that tends to contain one or two cans for easy access. You just never know when you might need one!
If you would have one year free time and enough money: Where would you spend your time and what would you do?
I would invest the money and ensure that the yields of my investments ensured even more free time in the future.
After that, I would definitely move to some interesting (preferably temperate/tropical) country that would allow me to pick up another language. I’ve studied a little bit of Japanese, Mandarin and Korean, so any of those would be nice to further pursue!
