Niall Callaghan (Live Operations Manager) englisch

Niall Callaghan (Live Operations Manager)

What is your name and what is your field of activity at NCsoft?

My name is Niall Callaghan, I’m currently transitioning from my position as Live Operations Manager for all EU NCsoft products to the position of Game Producer for Aion: The Tower of Eternity – so I’m doing two jobs at the moment and can’t wait to be focused full time on Aion.

How did you come to NCsoft?

I actually applied for a job at another Brighton Hove games based company and while I didn’t get that position they suggested I took temporary work at NCsoft while waiting for a more suitable job to surface. They gave me a link to PlayNC for a job in the publishing and QA department working on City of Heroes which I got and I never looked back!

What are you working on presently?

Sunny Boy

I’m mainly preparing for Aion beta and ensuring all processes and systems are set up. It’s a global operation and there’s a lot to do to syncronise operations between Korea, the USA and Europe.

What do you like most at your job?

Free toast and marmite. Oh, and working with creative and talented people who can pull off the crazy task of developing and publishing MMO’s.

What is your favourite NCsoft title and why?

Aion of course! It looks fantastic and if the devs manage to pull off everything they have planned it has the potential to be a great MMO experience.

What other game genres (except MMOs) are you interested in and what are your favourites?

Sunshine and beer

I guess looking back some my favourite gaming experiences have been with the Half life, Team Fortress, Civilisation and Zelda series of games. Just great games regardless of Genre. I also love classic arcade games and was brought up on Commodore Vic20’s and C64 games. Andrew Braybrook’s a bit of a hero of mine, he made some of my all time favourite games on the C64 such as ‘Gribbly’s Day Out’, ‘Paradroid’ and Uridium.

What is your favourite TV show or series? What are your favourite films?

TV – QI which is a quiz with Stephen Fry as host. Films, hmm so many good ones – Brazil, Sleeper, One flew Over the Cuckoo’ s Nest, Some Like it Hot, Memento, Groundhog Day, Shawshank Redemption, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Pulp Fiction.

Do you like reading? If yes, what kind of books do you have in your bookcase?

Yes, all sorts classic and contemporary, books by Aldous Huxley, Henry Miller, Ian (M) Banks, Carlos Castaneda, Olaf Stapledon, and baby name books (My son is due to be born very soon!)

What are you doing in your spare time?

Snowboard fan

I spend time with my family, play games, I love to go snowboarding when I can, especially hiking into the back country with a group of friends and riding the fresh powder!

McDonald’s or Burger King?

Neither, didn’t you see Supersize Me? I know a great little gastro pub though… My partner’s a trained cordon blue chef so food is a really important part of our lives. We eat so well at home that eating out has to be something really special.

Coca Cola or Pepsi?

Gin and Tonic.

If you would have one year free time and enough money: Where would you spend your time and what would you do?

I would hire a luxury camper van and take my family round the world taking in as many places and cultures as we could squeeze in.
