Kieran Weir (Project and Content Manager)
What is your name and what is your field of activity at NCsoft?
Hello, my name is Kieran Weir and I am the Project and Content Manager for NCsoft Europe’s Creative Services team. As a team, we are responsible for the content, design and implementation for many of NCsoft Europe’s consumer facing marketing materials, this could be anything from our in-depth community websites, the glossy advertisements, the newsletters you read religiously or the box artwork and packaging for our latest game.
How did you come to NCsoft?
I moved to Brighton to escape the hustle and bustle of London life, and for a breath of fresh (unpolluted) air. I used to work for Xbox and had heard that Brighton was a bit of a Mecca for the gaming industry. As luck would have it, NCsoft were looking for someone with a similar skill set to mine. I applied and here I am today.
What are you working on presently?
Hm, where to start? We’re a team that interfaces with many different departments within NCsoft Europe, so our workload can be very different from one week to the next. Currently we’re working on a stunning new Aion website (future plans for which are tightly under wraps, sorry), looking to improve and build our official Merchandise Store and some new City of Heroes features (coming soon).
What do you like most at your job?
It’s in gaming! What’s not to like? It’s hard to pinpoint any one thing, but I’d have to say it’s the work ethos of the company. We work in the entertainment industry, and creating fun and engaging with people is at the heart of everything we do, both inside and outside these four walls. Companies can lose sight of what it was they were originally created for, fortunately NCsoft isn’t one of them.
What is your favourite NCsoft title and why?
That’s a tough one. At the minute, I’d have to say Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa – it has a setting and story that appeals to me, and I like the fact we tried a few new game mechanics. That said, my jaw seems to hit the floor every time I log into a certain other title we have in development. Definitely one to keep an eye on…
What other game genres (except MMOs) are you interested in and what are your favourites?
I used to love racing and beat ‘em ups in my younger days, but I think that was more down to the adrenalin factor. Now I’m a bit older and (supposedly) a touch wiser, I go for quite tactical FPS games… give me Rainbow Six, Gears or BioShock and I’m a happy man…. okay, so I still go for adrenalin, it’s just of a different calibre.
What is your favourite TV show or series? What are your favourite films?
I don’t tend to watch TV too often, but I’m into Family Guy and have been sucked into Lost against my better judgement. Favourite film of all time would have to be Labyrinth, I saw it as a kid and have been hooked ever since. Other favourites include Donnie Darko, Usual Suspects and Old Boy.
Do you like reading? If yes, what kind of books do you have in your bookcase?
I do like reading, though I probably don’t make enough time for it as I should. I’m a fan of J G Ballard’s work and pick up most things by Irvine Welsh.
What are you doing in your spare time?
Getting to grips with my DSLR camera. I bought it a while back with little prior knowledge, so it’s been quite a learning experience. I’m still trying to find my own ‘style’, which at the moment ranges from the doomed to the disastrous.
McDonald’s or Burger King?
Neither. The thought brings me out in hives.
Coca Cola or Pepsi?
Coca Cola… with ice, some lime and a dash of vodka please.
If you would have one year free time and enough money: Where would you spend your time and what would you do?
I would invest the money and ensure that the yields of my investments ensured even more free time in the future.
I’d hire a ridiculously fast, oversized motorbike and travel from Canada, across the US, into South America and beyond (some kind of hover-bike, then). I’ve always fancied the lifestyle of a biker, but somehow my whining 50cc scooter just didn’t cut it. Who knows? Maybe one day…
